If you are interested to make a pilot study of the SDG*Chart of Emotions in your university, please post me a comment with your email address.  I don´t publish it, but in that way we can start our correspondence. In my opinion this SDG*emotions  is superior to the Plutcnik´s emotion wheel.  Maybe these two can be compared in the pilot study.

Quickstart guide for emotions

Here below you can see the main emotions of the  SDG Chart of Emotions.

   Arto Auranen

Here comes a short summary of the basic emotions, you can find on the SDG*Chart of emotions.  In the following texts in this weblog you can read more about these emotion scales in detail . The letter in parentheses indicates the direction of the scale (North, East, South, West):

UNSATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP (W) consists of injustice, hatred and rage.

SATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP (E) consists of openness, affection and connection.

ABSENCE OF SOMETHING GOOD (S) consists of desertion, sadness and irritation.

PRESENCE OF SOMETHING GOOD (N) consists of closeness, happiness and joy.

PURSUIT (N-W) consists of expectation, admiration and fanaticism

GIVING UP (S-E) consists of disappointment, disgust and exhaustion.

DOING WRONG  (S-W)consists of quilt, fear and horror.

DOING RIGHT (N-E) consists of responsibility, daring and energy.

It´s also useful to learn by heart the following counter emotions written in capital letters to get overview of this chart of emotion.

THREAT -  SAFETY

ENVY  -  SHAME

(When feeling envy man wants something desperately, but when somebody feels shame it is a situation when man is willing to get rid of something.)

ANXIETY  -   FREEDOM

AGONYFULFILLMENT

Love does not exist on this chart of emotion, because I think love more as an commitment.  It is written in the Bible that “God is love” (1.John 4:8)  and  “Love never fails” (1. Cor. 13:8).  All the emotions instead are changeable – like clouds in the sky.

To get out more of this SDG*Chart of emotions it is most recommendable to fix the pdf-copy of it somewhere you can scan it daily with your eyes.  Behind the EXPLANATION-bar will appear some information, that helps you when diving in the ocean of emotions.

For example you can read about near emotions as follows :

“Each emotion is surrounded by near emotions in connection with it by two or three circles.”

To make this more realistic lets take emotion “dependence” in the direction of half past three on the fifth circle from the hub.  Then you can find the following emotions surrounding dependence  on the chart :

Inferioriy, shame, need, affection, pleasure, connection, fascination and adaptability.

Most of these emotions are familiar to a person who is addicted.  When finding the words for the inner feelings they are possible to handle.

DOING RIGHT

Doing right things is a piece of cake, isn´t it?  Unfortunately that´s not usually reality in our everyday life.  We are normally not so sure what we really should do.

The emotion scale of DOING RIGHT on the SDG*Chart of Emotions   tells us some emotional aspects, which can guide us even to experience something called flow. It´s mainly matter of our vocation.  Whether we have find our place in the world or not?  The emotion scale of DOING RIGHT consists of responsibility, daring and energy.

You have maybe noticed that it´s advisable to exhale deeply when doing some physical exercises. Doing like that you can get more energy for your routines. Deep and strong exhale is common to all of the emotions existing on the north-eastern emotion scale called DOING RIGHT :

Peace

Calling

Responsibility

Confidence

Daring

Vitality

Energy

Ease

If we study this emotion scale from a Biblical view, it´s useful to read the following verse from the Bible :

“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared before that we would walk in them”  (Ef 2:10)

So when we´ll follow God´s will and our own calling we are able to do right things in the world.  To cite one comment I´ve received about this chart of emotions : “God is in control.”

DOING WRONG

Why do we fear? Why do we notice ourselves to take only short inhales while breathing? It´s an extremely  difficult question indeed.  Everyone is surely familiar to these kind scaring emotions. The Bible anyhow tells us  very many times not to fear.  The emotion scale of DOING WRONG on the SDG*Chart of Emotions   may reveal some mysteries around this frightening emotion.  You can read this scale to both directions – either from the middle to the south-western corner or from that corner to the hub.

When looking the scale in the first way, you can realize how fear appears to our life.  It´s quite often that we or some others have done something wrong at first.  You must also remember that many fears are created just in our own minds.

                        photo GEORGE CRUX  via www.SXC.hu

This time we concentrate to another way of dealing with fear. How to outgrow from our fears? I have heard that stronger emotion destroys the weaker one.  So if you fear and respect God more than anything else you don´t have to be afraid at all.

The emotion scale of DOING WRONG consists of horror, fear and quilt.  Jesus has carried every of those emotions on the cross on behalf of us. So this emotion scale starting from the south-western corner leads us to a very deep inner peace.  It is really possible if we are ready to repent and take the mercy what Jesus offers us.  In details the emotion scale of DOING WRONG goes as follows :

Phobia

Horror

Symptoms

Fear

Unbelief

Quilt

Repentance

Peace

You can find yourself or your friends feeling some of these emotions.  Jesus can set you free from them.  Prayer in the name of Jesus is extremely important in this process.  More detailed information of this item can be found on the following website telling about Dr. James Engel´s Chart.  The diagram can be found somewhere in the middle of the page :

http://www.internetevangelismday.com/engel-scale.php

Let´s not fear.

Some useful links

Here are some links related to the emotion scales called WRONG DOING  and RIGHT DOING.  I´m very pleased to find Dr. James Engel´s Chart on Mike Duran´s fascinating blog :

http://mikeduran.com/?p=1023

It lead me to the following website, where you can find more detailed information of the Engel´s Chart  :

http://www.internetevangelismday.com/engel-scale.php

There is quite a lot similarities with the Engel´s Chart and the diagonal of the Chart of Emotions going from south-west to north-east.

GIVING UP

Never say die. Sometimes there still comes times when you feel like giving up.  It may be a question of a wrong aim in your life, which can cause bore-out or burn-out symtomps. To get more information of these symptoms please click :

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boreout

http://www.docpotter.com/boclass-2bosymptoms.html

In the SDG*Chart of Emotions  the emotion scale of  GIVING UP goes to the south-east direction.  It consists of disappointment, disgust and exhaustion.

The emotion scale of GIVING UP goes as a whole the following :

Peace

Excitement

Disappointment

Antipathy

Disgust

Inability

Exhaustion

Emptiness

It´s vital that people would recognize their emotions on this line already when they start to feel strong antipathy against something.   If this process reaches the state of exhaustion it may take a long time to recover.

PURSUIT

Is all pursuit trivial? Not at all. We need some amount of pursuit in our life. The emotion scale of pursuit tells you what kind of emotions you may express when desiring something.  Basically this emotion scale of PURSUIT consists of  expectation, admiration and fanaticism.  All of these emotions are based on strong  and long inhale.  Desire is also quite easy to see from one´s eyes.

The whole emotion scale of PURSUIT goes as follows to the direction north-west on the SDG*Chart of Emotions :

Peace

Boredom

Expectation

Desire

Admiration

Lust

Fanaticism

Mania

By the way it was quite funny to see the fanaticism raising here in Finland during the  Olympic ice hockey tournament.

Emotions in the Bible

Emotions in the Bible? You can´t find word ”emotion ” in the Bible.  Neither you can´t find there any direct expressions of  “the Trinity”. Though the Bible is telling quite a lot about both of those items.  You can find more information about emotions in the Bible on the website :

http://www.ehow.com/about_4572075_what-does-bible-say-emotions.html

Just now I´m reading through the Bible underlining every emotional expression.  You can´t believe how much the Bible tells about emotions.  Especially the Psalms are full of feelings and affections.  So if you want to have examples of very passionate emotional expression you ought to read the Psalms. Other Scriptures dealing with emotions can be read on the following web address :

http://www.americanbible.org/pages/read-seasons-emotions

Please notice that SDG*Chart of Emotions is Christ-centered although I think that the Bible is the most  reliable source in the case you´d like to learn to know your emotions.  Forgiving for Christ´s sake gives us peace in our hearts.  It makes our everyday emotional burdens lighter to carry.

PRESENCE OF SOMETHING GOOD

Gladness, happiness, joy and emotions like these are something we all are fond of.  In the chart of emotions there is an emotion scale called presence of something good.  As a child I liked very much rolling a ball, but happiness means different things for different people.

photo : ESHAN NAMAVAR via www.SXC.hu

Going back to business  - the emotion scale of PRESENCE OF SOMETHING GOOD consists of closeness, happiness and joy.  There can also be found more precise expressions on this part of the scale.  For example on the following website, you can find this kind of list of growing states of joyfulness :  “ glad < happy < delighted <  joyful < thrilled < rapturous < ecstatic ”

http://www.sengifted.org/articles_social/Lind_DevelopingAFeelingVocabulary.shtml

According to the SDG*Chart of Emotions  the whole scale of PRESENCE OF SOMETHING GOOD  sounds as follows  going northwards from the middle :

Peace

Relaxation

Closeness

Relief

Happiness

Suprise

Joy

Euphoria

Mainly all the emotions on this emotion scale are based on short exhale.  For example laughter is just a series of short pieces of exhale. Positive surprise makes an exception consisting of a quite deep inhale.  It makes us ready to laugh.

ABSENCE OF SOMETHING GOOD

Mourning is an inevitable part of our life. If something good is missing in your life, you can probably find your emotions on the southwards pointing emotion scale called ABSENCE OF SOMETHING GOOD explaining the process of mourning. This scale makes an exception to the structure of the chart of emotions by going towards to the center as times go by.  Mourning disappears little by little but other subtle feelings stay to reminder you of the loss.

This emotion scale consists of desertion, sadness and irritation.  Let me explain a little bit. First you realize that something, which means a lot for you, is missing.  Then follows active time of mourning.  It may consist of very different mourning patterns, you can read more from the following website :

http://www.griefhealing.com/column-different-grief-patterns.htm

After successfully mourning you may still feel irritated when something quite similar to your loss appears to your sight.

The whole emotion scale of ABSENCE OF SOMETHING GOOD in details on the SDG*Chart of Emotions goes from the utterly southest point of the chart to the middle as follows. These emotions are based on short inhale :

Despair

Desertion

Shock

Sadness

Worry

Irritation

Tension

Peace

During active mourning session, which may last even a couple of years, you may feel very many different emotions from anger and rage to guilt.  It´s quite normal.

Chart of Emotion is easier for men to realize

I was quite astonished, when I noticed that it´s so difficult for most women to internalize the SDG*Chart of Emotions without verbal explanation.  After reading a book written by Peter A. Andersen this mystery was revealed.  In “Nonverbal Communication. Forms and Functions” Andersen tells the following fact : According Gaulin (1992) men tend to place them on a map when orientating but women usually rely on landmarks and verbal clues.

     photo BARTEK AMBROZIK via www.sxc.hu

So for men the SDG*Chart of Emotions is just a map where they can virtually travel from an emotion to another.  Women seem to need more explanation.

Facial expressions

It´s quite difficult to find facial expressions in Internet.  Hereby you can watch, how emotions even though are quite easy to recognize even if you can see them on a face of a Chinese woman.  Facial expressions  are international.

It´s also funny to try to express your emotions without any words.

It´s useful to name your emotions

After reading to following link you´ll find out, what kind of consequencies naming emotions may cause.

http://college.ucla.edu/news/07/feelings-into-words.html

Here comes some other reasons why it would be reasonable to study the chart of emotions.

1) Emotional Intelligence (EI) has been found even more important factor to a succesful living than Intelligence Quotient (IQ).  Naming emotions  (or perceiving emotions and identifying them) is the basic element in EI. That´s why the Chart of Emotions has been created.

2)Human beings get lots of psychosomatic symptoms because of not live-through their emotions.  The aim of many therapies is to let them realize their emotions - to learn to name their emotions first.

3)Many people have huge difficulties to say more than "I feel bad" or "I feel great".

"Not being able to ACCURATELY articulate our and other´s feelings can lead to frustration and a reluctance to communicate".
http://www.sengifted.org/articles_social/Lind_DevelopingAFeelingVocabulary.shtml

"If you can see the emotion, then you can respond appropriately to it."

UNSATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP

Unsatisfactory relationship is the name of the emotion scale beaming to the west  on the SDG*Chart of Emotions .

The scale of UNSATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP consists of injustice, hatred and rage. These emotions are based on strong inhale.

photo : EMILIANO SPADA via www.SXC.hu

The whole emotion scale of UNSATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP in details goes as follows :

Confusion

Injustice

Anger

Hatred

Cruelty

Rage

Hysteria

Of course every relationship has to face some of these feelings, but if they seem to be there to stay, then it is time to do something in a different way.  Openness and forgiving are keys for a better relationship.  You must never accept any physical violence in your relationship.  If something like that occurs, please contact someone who can help you.

SATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP

Satisfactory relationship is the name of the emotion scale beaming to the east on the SDG*Chart of Emotions

The emotion scale of SATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP  consists of openness, affection and connection.  These kind of emotions are expressed with exhale

photo : "BRIERLEY", Austria via www.sxc.hu

The whole emotion scale of SATISFACTORY RELATIONSHIP  in details goes as follows.

Clearness

Openness

Acceptance

Affection

Pleasure

Connection

Fascination

In practice this means, that before you can create a satisfactory relationship, you have to communicate clearly, be open and accept the personality of the other human being.  Then it is possible to feel affection and to do something nice with that person.  Usually this process takes a long time.

Welcome to FEELINGS-weblog

In this blog I´ll explain the structure of the SDG*Chart of Emotions so that you could get the best out it.  In the near future you´ll get to know the names for the eight emotion scales.
